When I was growing up, I was extremely shy. I didn't want any interactions with anyone except from my direct family, let alone that I would ever do anything that would draw attention to myself outside the home.

I had to learn the hard way, in school, that this in fact was the very thing that did draw attention ...my shyness.  

And it attracted those who offered the worst kind of attention ...confrontational.

When confronted, I certainly did not want to participate ...but I also didn't want to run, as that also would draw attention.  So, I just remained quiet ...and at times got beat on.
